The process is time-consuming, and it requires strategic planning and commitment. 

There is so much that goes into managing a blog successfully; researching, writing, editing, marketing, and the list goes on. But no need to panic, it’s definitely doable with a daily routine for a blogger to keep your day efficient and productive.

The Importance of a Daily Routine For Bloggers

You may be thinking I’ve lived my whole life without a daily routine, why do I need a routine now? 

Routines provide a host of benefits and here we break down why it’s important to have a daily routine and how it can especially benefit bloggers. 

Humans are creatures of habit and it has been suggested that life is more meaningful with routine living, and it allows for space to pursue larger goals. “What you do repeatedly is what will create the quality of your life.” (Forbes, 2018)

By having a daily routine, you are more likely to manage your time well. Time is a limited resource, and the goal is to use it in the most efficient way possible. 

When we have a fixed daily regime that we consistently follow each day, it allows us to minimize time spent on making decisions and focus on getting things done.

We will save on time usually used to plan out the day, and we’ll get into the flow of doing effortlessly. 

Designing an efficient daily routine as a blogger will allow you to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner rather than leave it up to chance. 

For example, if you set out time to write and edit posts each day, you’ll be able to post at least 1 post each week. 

And once blogging becomes a part of your daily life, you’re more likely to do it out of habit even on days that you’re running low on motivation. Just like how we brush our teeth every morning!

You’ll find that you’re gaining momentum, becoming faster, and finding it easier to carry out your blogging tasks each day. You’ll also be less likely to procrastinate as it becomes an active habit of your day-to-day life.

1. Have A Plan & Vision

A daily routine of a blogger differs from person to person depending on what their goals are and how much time they have on hand. You’re probably here because you’re a blogger or you want to start a blog. 

Blogging can be a hobby that you work on in your free time, but if you want to monetize it and turn it into a full-time business, you have to have a plan. 

Just like anything you want to succeed in, wherever you are on your blogging journey, having a strategy, and vision in place is essential. 

Here in my daily routine as a blogger blog post, I would like to place emphasis on creating a comprehensive blogging plan. It will prompt you to achieve your vision and desired outcomes for you as a blogger. 

A great place to start when creating a strategy is to define your blog’s purpose and its target audience. This will allow you to mindfully create content. 

A plan for your blog can include:

A huge component of planning that is often overlooked is creating time to pursue a plan. You can have the best blogging plan in the world, but without time and energy to implement it, it’ll just be an incredible plan. 

Make sure your blogging plan fits into your life without too much effort. 

Do this by determining how much time you can set aside each day of the week. 

For example, if you’re working full-time, create a plan that takes into account that you can only do your tasks for an hour on weekdays.

2. List Out Your Blogging Tasks 

Now that you have created a plan and you know the direction you’re headed in, it’s time to get clear on all the tasks you’ll need to tackle on a daily or weekly basis. 

You may be thinking, that besides writing and publishing posts, there isn’t much else to blogging. That’s a great starting point, however, it isn’t that simple. 

For your blog to be successful, you’ll have to consider many aspects other than writing such as research. 

You’ll be spending a lot of your time researching your competition, your target audience, keywords, content ideas, blogging terms (especially if you’re just starting out), and so on. 

Another key component of blogging is promoting your blog, which is essential especially if you’re new to the game or you haven’t been getting much traffic. 

You can promote your blog by getting a backlink from guest posts, on social media platforms, by building an email list, and more. 

Here I share with you the top priority tasks on my daily to-do-list, to give you an idea of what tasks can be a part of your weekly or daily blogging to-do list.

Do keep in mind though that everyone’s blogging journey is different, if you’re just starting out or blogging part-time, your list may be shorter.  

Create a list of tasks based on what you are already doing with your blog and what else you can see yourself doing right now. It’s also key that you have time to do these tasks efficiently, you don’t want to overcrowd your schedule and stress yourself out.

3. Create A Weekly Schedule For Blogging Tasks   

Now that you’re certain about your blogging tasks, let’s move on to the most crucial step in creating a daily routine blogger style, creating a weekly schedule. 

So how many hours do bloggers work in a day? Let’s find out. 

The great thing about blogging as a career besides being your own boss is the flexibility, you can work for 8 hours one day, and only for ½ hour the next. 

In this part of the post, I blog about my daily routine as a blogger. 

The first step to creating a weekly schedule is to determine how long it takes to carry out each task. 

However, if a task is new to you, you’ll probably need to observe how much time you spend on it over the next few weeks to get a reliable estimate. 

This exercise will help determine how many hours a week you’ll need to set aside solely for blogging tasks. 

We’re going to use the list of blogging tasks we’ve created and start jotting down how much time we usually allocate or would like to allocate to these tasks on a weekly basis. Let’s use my list as an example:

As I work on my blog full time at the moment, these are the hours I’ve set for myself weekly. 

Based on these hours, I publish 5-7 articles a week, try to do a guest post once every month, and schedule pins and social media posts a week ahead. 

After blogging for a while now, these are the hours that work best for me. 

It took me a month or two to understand how much time I needed for each task, and it may take you some time too. 

Now that you’ve figured out the hours, we can move on to creating a schedule that works for you. From the table above, you can see that I set aside 35 hours a week just for blogging tasks, this is my blogger daily schedule.

And there you have it, my daily routine that you as a blogger can use as a reference! 

I personally choose to start my workdays a little later as I love to get in a sweat sesh in the mornings.

I take a one hour break daily in the middle of the day for lunch. And I prefer to take the whole weekend off so that I’m completely free to spend time with family and friends. 

You may not go for the same times of the day, and you may need to work on weekends depending on your circumstance. If you work a 9-5 job, are a full-time parent, or intend to only blog part-time, find what times work best for you. 

Once you’ve created your blogging schedule, integrate it with your daily life and see if it fits!

4. Prioritizing Blogging Tasks 

When creating your daily routine blogger edition, you want to make sure that it is efficient and sustainable. 

As I’ve shared above, there are multiple blogging tasks that I tackle throughout the week. How do I know how to manage them effectively? 

I use a simple method called ‘prioritization’, which is the process of determining what to give your attention to based on importance. There are two ways to prioritize tasks: 

  1. What tasks need to be done preliminarily 
  2. What tasks need special attention 
  3. What tasks need urgency 
  4. What the task accomplishes,

For example, tasks like carrying out research and finding keywords for new blog posts need to be done preliminarily. This ensures that when I start writing, I get into a state of flow. 

And bigger tasks like writing and editing posts require more time, focus, and urgency (as I need to post at least once weekly). So, I prioritize it by giving it the most hours of the week. 

On the other hand, tasks like writing guest posts are important for the growth and success of my blog. So although my goal is to write only one article each month, I spend 2 hours each week on it. 

According to productivity consultant, David Allen, to prioritize tasks efficiently, one needs to constantly review their task list and priorities for best results. 

So keep in mind that when your priorities change for your blog like if you take on a fun new project, it’s okay to change up your schedule.

5. Block Out Your Calendar for Focused Time

Have you heard of time blocking, this is a great method for busy bees to make time work for you.

Time blocking is a time management method used to take back control of your packed schedule. It is for you if you juggle many responsibilities, are easily distracted or are often interrupted, or simply can’t find the time and energy for time-consuming tasks. 

Each ‘time block’ that you set is dedicated to accomplishing a particular task or a particular group of tasks, for example, in my schedule, I’ve blocked out 8 to 11.30 am on weekdays just for blogging-related tasks. 

I prefer this method to just crossing off an open-ended to-do list, this allows you to get into the right mind frame to get work done. You won’t waste time deciding on what to do at the moment. 

However, this method only works efficiently when you create a prioritized task list in advance of time blocking. 

Time blocking has several unique variations such as: 

  • task batching
  • day theming
  • time boxing

Task batching is when you group similar or small tasks together and set a time block to complete them all at once. For example, I batch audience engagement, replying to e-mails, and admin tasks under a group. 

Day theming is when you dedicate a whole day each week to a certain type of task, this is especially useful if you have many responsibilities or you’re managing more than one blog or business. 

For example, Monday’s theme is marketing and this is when you work on marketing strategy and create all your posts for social media and pins, and schedule them for the week. 

Timeboxing is when you set aside time to do a specific task but with a limit. For example, I will complete the revision of my blog posts from 10 am to 11.30 am. 

I often use task batching and time boxing to get my tasks done. Find out which time blocking method suits you by simply trying all of them out. And remember, do not be too rigid and give yourself the space to edit plans as the day fills out. 

Time blocking is not for everyone but I think it’s great for personal bloggers as we mostly work on our own!

6. Create The Daily Routine For You 

That’s a wrap! Now that you’re well equipped with all the information I’ve shared with you, you can create your very own daily routine as a blogger. 

All you have to do is add a concrete blogging schedule to your existing daily routine.

 I want to reiterate here that you should only take on what you will be able to do efficiently, it is okay to space out your growth and schedule in some ‘me’ time, I do take days off here and there on top of my work free Sundays.

Also, keep in mind that this routine is for a normal week. 

Give yourself the flexibility to tweak it if something comes up, I mean, life happens. Going on vacation with the family? That’s okay, just work out a way to complete your tasks. 

Just don’t give up on it entirely and work your way around it!

Tips For Productivity For Bloggers 

After blogging for years, I have found a few tricks that have helped me be more organized and productive as a blogger. 

1. Write When You Have The Energy 

Instead of fixing a time of the day that you’re free to write, it is essential that you write at a point that you’re able to perform. 

Also known as the “peak performance period”, it is the time of the day that you’re most energized and focused to work on prioritized tasks. 

As I’ve mentioned before, I prefer to do my blogging tasks in the morning, between 8 to 11.30 am. This is when I’m most productive. 

It doesn’t necessarily have to be in the morning, I’m just a morning person. Pick a time frame that you’ll be able to focus on and get work done faster and better. 

2. Create An Outline Before Writing Blog Posts 

How often have you gotten writer’s block whilst free writing an article? 

I don’t know about you, but I have noticed that I take much longer to write a whole article when I have no clear direction. 

Creating an outline before writing a post is by far the best productivity strategy I’ve implemented as a blogger. It gives me structure and focus, I start by settling on a title or keyword I’m going to write about. 

From there, I create a mindmap when doing research, listing out all the key points and sub-points I want to cover, and then I arrange them according to sequence before I start writing a post. 

And then, once I’m happy with the outline, there is no turning back. 

I prefer writing this way as it’s straightforward and it allows me to focus on what I’ve decided I will be writing about in a particular post. I then go ahead and write the introduction as part of my outline, as it sets the tone for the whole article. 

3. Plan out, Write and Edit Articles Step by Step

This is a personal rule that I feel has helped me write more efficiently.

 I separate writing into 3 categories; planning, writing, and editing. 

The planning part entails researching blog post ideas and coming up with an outline, this part is where I create structure and focus.

 When I move on to writing, I try to just focus on the writing bit, and make all the edits once I’m done with writing. 

When I do all these actions together at once, I find myself wasting more time, and sometimes, never actually getting anything solid done. 

This is also a great way to work on multiple projects at one go, you won’t be stuck on just one article the whole week.

Tips For Time Management For Bloggers 

1. Schedule Your Posts Ideas in A Calendar

Once you have brainstormed ideas for new posts, you may have a hard time picking which ones to write for the week. 

A great way to save time is to schedule your ideas into your content calendar, that way you know what you’ll be writing each week. 

You’ll also be able to cluster ideas that are within the same topic and you’ll be able to keep tabs on which articles you can repurpose. 

For example, I can now create a cluster for my blog daily routines related and my next article could be ‘day in the life blog template’. 

2. Eliminate Distractions When Working 

Everyone struggles with being focused whilst using devices. 

How often do you intend to do one thing on your phone and realize that you’ve spent half an hour scrolling through your phone? 

Eliminate distractions whilst working by making sure all social media tabs and tabloid tabs are closed on your browser. If you can, place your phone away from you or on silent mode, especially when tackling heavy tasks like writing and editing. 

The average person will be alert for no longer than 90 minutes before needing a break, and for some people, that duration is even shorter.

 The Pomodoro technique is a great tool to get to work in short 20-minute bursts of focus. 

3. Track Your Promotional Activities and Prioritize What Works

There are so many ways to promote your blog and your brand. 

Many bloggers use Facebook groups, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and guest posts to drive traffic to their blogs. 

Whilst there are so many ways to do this, it is not essential for bloggers to be active on every platform. Not only is it time-consuming, not all these channels are guaranteed to bring you traffic and income. 

Analyze your statistics regularly to understand how best to prioritize your promotional efforts. 

If Pinterest is bringing in the most traffic, prioritize marketing on it first before getting to your less-performing channels. 

Also, create a plan on how to grow on platforms you think will eventually reap the benefits you desire and eliminate platforms that will stunt your growth.
