Pinterest is the go-to platform for anyone looking for a little inspiration. When users find something that they like, they pin them onto a Pinterest board that they can create.
Think of it as a virtual vision board.
The categories of boards that you can create and what you can pin on these boards are endless.
Whether you are looking for home decor ideas, recipes, or parenting hacks, you are bound to find inspiration on Pinterest.
The beautiful thing about Pinterest is that the platform bolsters the discovery of content as opposed to just pinning its content and storing it in a safe place!
As a Pinterest content creator, your objective will be to use Pinterest to make money from affiliate marketing or drive users to click on links to your blog or website.
This is where Pinterest keywords come in.
What Are Pinterest Keywords?
Pinterest keywords are essentially what users on the Pinterest platform are searching for.
So, ideally, when you create pins, you want to use words in your title or description to match what users are searching for.
This is what Pinterest SEO or search engine optimization is!
This means that your pin will show up on the Pinterest search results for users to click on it. This is the basic premise of the Pinterest algorithm.

All you need to do is type in a broad keyword and the Pinterest keyword research tool will give you a list of all the search terms that are related to that.
Once you have a substantial number of keywords that have:
- a high search volume and
- low competition
save those keywords!
You can then use these variations in your content to increase the chances of your pins being at the top of the search results page!

Now that we are familiar with the type of Pinterest keyword tools that are available, let’s take a look at how to do keyword research for Pinterest.
1. How To Find Pinterest Keywords Using KeySearch
Have I mentioned that KeySearch is super easy to use?
Step 1: Enter a broad term into the search bar. I have searched for “healing crystals” in the example below.
Step 2: Select “All Locations”
Step 3: Click on the dropdown box and select “Pinterest Suggest”
Step 4: Click “Search”
Step 5: Scroll through the results on the right to see which specific keyword works for your content!

2. How To Find Keywords Using The Pinterest Search Bar Or Pinterest Guided Search
Step 1: Start typing your search term. I have searched for “high tea decor”.
Step 2: Have a look at the suggested search terms just below what you have typed out.
Step 3: Click “Search”.
Step 4: Have a look at the suggestions under the search bar again for more keyword ideas!
3. How To Find Pinterest Keywords Using The Pinterest Keyword Tool
Remember that you can only use this tool if you have a Pinterest business account as it is only accessible via the BusinessHub.
Step 1: Create an ad account. Don’t worry. You don’t have to actually create an ad. You just need to get to the keyword research tool.
Step 2: Go to the Ads tab and click on “Create an ad”.
Step 3: Identify your business goal. Select “Traffic”
Step 4: Once you get to the next page, keep scrolling until you get to the keywords section.
Step 5: Type in your broad search term and then let the results come to you directly from Pinterest, together with the search volume of each keyword! You can choose which keywords you want to use for your content.
4. How To Find Pinterest Keywords Using Pinterest Trends
Step 1: Access your Pinterest BusinessHub.
Step 2: Go to the “Analytics” tab.
Step 3: Scroll down and click on “Trends”.
With this, you can filter the trends by location (UK, US, or Canada), depending on the kind of content that you are creating.
Once you insert a broad keyword in the trend search bar, you will get all the relevant keywords that are part of the trend. This feature will also give you an idea of how this keyword has been doing over time.
Additionally, you can also check out Pinterest Predicts for possible keywords that you can use in the future! This feature allows you to filter predictions by category or audience.
Where To Add Keywords In Pinterest
Now that you know how and where to find your keywords for Pinterest, let’s figure out how to add keywords to Pinterest and where exactly these keywords need to go.
To start with, try to ensure that keywords that are related to your niche are contained in:
- Your Pinterest bio
- Your username
- Your business name
To truly optimize your content for Pinterest search results, you should ideally add your keywords to:
- The image you are using for the design of your pin
- The title of your pin
- The description of your pin
- The URL in your destination link
For example, if I were to search for “meal prep” on Pinterest, one of the top results that come up is the Pinterest profile of Gimme Delicious.
You will notice that this profile has the phrase “meal prep” strategically used in the title, description, and profile bio.
How Many Keywords Should You Use On Pinterest?
Ideally, you should use between 2-5 keywords per Pinterest post.
That doesn’t mean you have to stuff your description with keywords to the point that it sounds unnatural!
This is where it matters to take the time to come up with a thoughtful description so that you can fit in your keywords appropriately.
Are Keywords Important For Pinterest?
If you are looking to drive traffic to your Pinterest page or to your website, then keywords are most certainly important for Pinterest.
When you use keywords that are related to your post or niche, these keywords tell Pinterest to recognize your content in that category and organize it accordingly.
Once it recognizes your content through the use of the relevant keywords, it has the ability to show your content to users who search for it.
Best Practices To Get The Most Out Of Pinterest
Once you have got the hang of Pinterest keyword research, you can start to fine-tune your Pinterest strategy to maximize the ways in which Pinterest can work for you.
Some of the best practices that you can implement on Pinterest include:
1. Learn Pinterest SEO
Search engine optimization by using the various keyword research methods mentioned above doesn’t just work for Pinterest.
Google loves Pinterest so if you implement an effective SEO strategy on Pinterest, Google will show your Pinterest content on its search results as well
This means that your website or blog will be exposed to a brand new audience outside of Pinterest.
2. Pinning Frequently And Consistently
There is a misconception that once you create a pin, you can forget about it. This could not be further from the truth!
The key to Pinterest is consistency.
That doesn’t mean that you pin 10 pins in an hour every day! This may result in your account being categorized as spam!
Ideally, you should pin 3 posts a day, every day.
If you find that this may be too time-consuming or tedious, you can use apps like Tailwind which help you to plan and schedule your Pinterest posts in advance.
3. Creating A Variety Of Pins
The other common mistake that new pinners make is creating just one pin for a particular blog post.
A better strategy would be to create at least 3 to 4 pins that link to the same post.
It is important not to duplicate your content. So change up the images and the descriptions a little before pinning them to your boards.
Remember, Pinterest loves variety and pretty pictures!
Canva is a great resource to use to create pins. They have beautiful templates just for Pinterest so you know that you will get the right image size every time.

4. Joining Group Boards And Pinterest Communities
It is important to remember that Pinterest is all about discovery, collaboration, and community.
As such, there are plenty of Pinterest group boards that you can join. A group board is a collection of pins from many different users.
As a content creator, you would have your own boards where you pin your pins and those of others.
A group board is just that – a group effort.
The best thing about being able to pin your content to group boards is that your content will be seen by those who are not already following your boards!
Conclusion
As you can see, doing Pinterest keyword research is relatively straightforward when compared to SEO for other search engines.
It also helps that Pinterest makes it as easy as possible for you to optimize your content to reach a wider audience. This then results in higher traffic to your website.
That being said, getting Pinterest to work for you does take some initial effort.
So don’t expect immediate results. In fact, when I first joined Pinterest almost 2 years ago, I only had 6 views.
However, what I have learned during the course of my Pinterest journey is that if you are patient and stick with your Pinterest strategy, it is bound to work for you in the long run.
And if you implement your Pinterest keyword research techniques properly, you can see a substantial increase in views in just 3 months or so. This is exactly what happened to me.
I ignored all other social media platforms and gave Pinterest my all and in just 3 months, my views went up to 10K.
