How To Get Started As A Non Native Teacher
In order to get started with non native English teacher jobs, there are a few basic requirements :
- At least a good proficiency with the English language.
- Have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language ‘TEFL’ certificate
- Have a headset* and a laptop**
- A good internet connection
A Proficiency In The English Language
If you plan to teach English online… the at the very least you should be able to speak it well!
I am not saying you need to sound like the Queen, but an ability to converse well with minimal grammar mistakes and spot basic language mistakes is necessary.
Note- You don’t need to be a grammar pro, I am not. I choose not to focus and teach English grammar in my lessons. More on that later 🙂
A TEFL Certification
In order to get started you generally need a bachelor’s degree, and some sort of teaching certificate like the TEFL.
You can easily get a 120-hour TEFL certificate online and complete it in the evenings and weekends if you work full time.
There is a 120-hour online course ran by Let’s TEFL which provides a whole module on online teaching and specific training to ensure your application, resumes, introduction videos for recruiters, is done right.
I prefer their TEFL because compared to other TEFL providers, as it specialises in preparing you to teach online.
Of course, they also train you how to teach English as foreign language, but on top of that, they prepare you for the online teaching industry .
Once you complete the 120-hour TEFL certificate, you will know how to teach English as a foreign language.
In addition to this, you will have a strong understanding of:
- the online teaching industry and job market,
- know how to prepare your lesson plans and
- how to motivate your students in an online classroom.
As far as I’m aware, Let’s TEFL are the only course available online now which comes with a whole extra video module with specific training for teaching online – presented by an actual teacher.
They are also endorsed by DaDa and iTutorGroup as one of their recommended courses. (Both are two HUGE online schools)
If you don’t have a degree, it’s worth you looking into this article :
Have a Headset and a Laptop
Most of the online teaching jobs require you to have a laptop. A simple one will do, don’t spend too much money at the beginning.
Also, some online schools prefer if you have a headset which you can buy on Amazon for cheap, but I just used my Apple earphones.
You can get away with teaching using your smart phone for some companies but all the best online english teaching jobs for non native speakers require a laptop.
A Good Internet Connection
Generally, a sufficient speed for teaching online would be 8Mbps download and 2-3Mbps upload. But you can just Google the wifi requirements of each school before you apply.

How To Increase Your Rate As An Online Teacher:
I am going to be honest.
Due to the fact that you are a non-native speaker, some companies may pay you less than native-speakers.
But I have a solution:
Niche down to become a Business English Tutor or an IELTS Specialist
Why ?
Because teachers in this niche are in high demand
Busy working professionals who want to enhance their business language skills, have the money and desire to pay Business teachers to help them improve.
Also, students are in great need of IELTS teachers to pass visa application English requirements and to pass IELTS to enter universities .
The great thing about this is, these types of students are willing to pay GOOD MONEY, for you to help them.
How to Become An IELTS Specialist:
If you want to become an IELTS Teacher, take the Teaching IELTS 30 Hour Online course. It trains you how to become an online IELTS teacher, so you can charge a higher rate
How to Become a Business English Teacher
The Teaching Business English 30 Hour Online Course will train you to become a Business English teacher. You get an internationally recognised certificate, personal tutor support, training on lesson plans and anything you need to know about the job market.
Also, any work experience you have working for a company in an office will greatly help 🙂
Once I up-skilled and became a Business English and IELTS specialist, my rate went from $15 per hour to about $40-$65 per hour.
I could work less because I earned more and spend my free time motorbiking thorough the countrysides!
(Ps; If you also like motorbikes, add me on IG, I love connecting with motorbike peeps or anyone who loves travel too! :))

AISHA:
YOU REALLY SHOULD PUT A DISCLAIMER THAT YOU ARE POSTING REFERRAL LINKS OF YOUR OWN ON THIS PAGE IN ORDER TO MAKE MORE MONEY OFF OF NEW STUDENTS.
I have no problem if you want to do that, but it’s a bit disingenuous of you to NOT mention this. There are many many many people who constantly post their referral links online everywhere and THEY DON’T GUIDE THE “HOPEFUL APPLICANT” THROUGH THE HIRING PROCESS. All they do is drop their referral links and then disappear.
So, if you’re going to provide your referral links, you should actually BE HELPING them get the position/job, and I doubt that is something you will do given all the referrals you’re getting.
Hi John,
Thanks for your concern
You make a good point but I have earned ZERO from any online school referrals thus far.
In order to earn from them, you need to be working with/for them – which I no longer do, as I have transitioned into having my own private students now.
If you click any of the links for the schools- there is no referral ID linking them to me. People are welcome to choose ANY school that best suits their circumstances.
I used to work for quite a few of the online schools, so the info on my site comes from personal experience, from my teacher friends working for those schools and from hours of research scouring forums and sites for the info.
Also – you may not see it, but I get lots of emails where I do guide applicants and give advice .. all for free 🙂
I hope that clarifies and have a great day ahead.
Aisha
