I am writing a guide on ‘How to Make Money Blogging for Beginners’ because this was the exact question I had when I wanted to start a blog.
After taking a few expensive courses and googling extensively like a madwoman, I finally worked out how to make money blogging. To avoid you the hassle and stress of trying to find the answers in various places, I am writing a guide here. I hope it helps.
There is a lot of mystery surrounding how bloggers make money blogging, and quite frankly, I thought you had to have millions of followers to make any money at all.
I was wrong.
This humble blog generates a decent income for me, not enough to retire just yet! But enough to pay some bills and save.
So, if you are thinking of setting up a blog, how can you make money from it?

You can make money from your blog in 6 main ways. There are other ways, but I will explain the easiest and quickest ones for now.

Display Advertising
The first easy way to make money blogging is by display advertising. This basically involves an advertising network paying you every time someone views or clicks on an advert on your page.
So, the more people that view your blog ‘pageviews’, the more you earn.
How do you get started?
You just apply for the advertising networks, they approve your application and then adverts start appearing on your site.
The more people that view your site, the more money you earn.
Note- Some advertising networks have a minimum page view requirement, but some don’t.
Here is a list of advertising networks you can sign up to for FREE:
- Google AdSense-No minimum pageviews
- Pop Ads-No minimum pageviews
- VigLink–No minimum pageviews
- Media.net- No minimum pageviews
- Ezoic- No minimum pageviews
- Monumetic- Minimum 10,000 pageviews – Now they charge $99 for signup
- Mediavine- Minimum 25,000 SESSIONS*
- Adthrive- Minimum 100,000 pageviews
*Sessions are a different metric from pageviews
So, if you are a new blogger, wait till you have about 10 blog posts up and then apply for an advertising network IMMEDIATELY.
You should be able to make about $1 per 1,000 visitors to your site if you have enough placements. I know this doesn’t sound like much, but once you reach 10k page views, you can apply for higher-paying advertising networks that pay much more.
I know bloggers earning $2000 and more from advertising networks.

Blog Sponsorships
Another way to make money blogging is via Sponsored Posts. This is where you get paid to write or talk about a product or service on your blog or social media networks.
I always thought you needed to have millions of social media followers to be paid for sponsored posts, but my IG followers are less than 2k and I earned about $500 from sponsored posts last week.
PRO TIP: Don’t undersell yourself and don’t promote stuff you don’t believe in. Your readers will never trust you and go elsewhere. It will also make you look scammy.
For example- I don’t believe in using excessively expensive makeup products. I spend all my money on saving, eating, or traveling.
So even though I have been approached by beauty companies and offered decent money, because their products don’t resonate with my values I turn them down.
How do you get started with sponsored posts?
Sometimes you get approached, but you can also apply for sponsorship networks.

A really good course that helped me learn how to make money on Sponsored Posts is the: Making Sense of Sponsored Posts Course.

They teach you where to find sponsored posts, what to charge, how to set yourself apart from the competition, and negotiate a higher rate.

Having a professional media kit will help you charge more.
Affiliate Marketing
My favourite way of to make money blogging is affiliate marketing. I used to be suspicious of the term ‘affiliate marketing’ until I realized it was basically being paid for what I do anyway. I recommend products or services which I use that were helpful in my remote working journey.
You get paid a commission if someone purchases something using your link.
The buyer pays the same price as they would if they purchased without your link, the seller pays the commission to you.

Digital Products
Digital products are a great way to earn from your blog because you create the product once and you can earn from them again and again!
Digital products include e-books, e-courses, anything that can be downloaded.

Writing
Your blog posts are essentially a portfolio of your writing. Potential writing clients can see your writing and hire you if they like your writing style.
Also, you can apply for writing jobs and use your blogs as samples (they will ask for writing samples)
I have done both.
Coaching
The more you write on your blog, the more you build up your authority as a subject matter expert. People will pay for your knowledge.
For example, I provide coaching on how to transition from an office job to a remote working role (because I have done it myself.)
I also teach people how to build their businesses online. A few of my recent clients have successfully transitioned to become freelance editors, online teachers, writers, social media managers, and bloggers.
Most recently, I helped a stay at home mom launch her parenting blog, which she now earns from.
I am so happy and proud of my students and their success is my success. It’s a win-win!
