  • Celebrities: They can generate over $1 million per post

You might be thinking, but how to get paid on Instagram without tens of thousands of followers?

Yes! you can, I made $8,970 from coaching alone from my Instagram community, and at that time I had less than 5,000 followers only.

So, don’t feel discouraged yet!

Ways To Make Money From Instagram

1. Collaborate With Brands

Many brands pay a good amount to Instagram accounts to promote their products/services.

You can get paid thousands of dollars from one sponsored post alone

But for this, you would need to grow your Instagram account to build your community first and generate a strong engagement from your followers.

You can check out the Instagram insights to learn more about overall trends across your followers and your content’s performance with your audience.

It’s essential to know the wants and needs of your audience to cater the right products/services to them.

Most importantly, collaborate with brands that align with your niche and provide value to your audience.

Avoid collaborating with many brands and posting sponsored ads that are opposite to your brand, identity, and beliefs.

Remember this to avoid hurting your credibility and losing the trust of your followers.

It will take a longer time to gain people’s trust, but it only takes a second to break it down, so be cautious.

It took me years to build my small Instagram community and gain their trust, but it was worth it because now I have a community that buys my products and services.

If you have built a strong following on Instagram, big brands and the brands that you want to collaborate with will notice you and approach you organically.

If you want to take it to the next level, you can reach out to the brands that you want to work with directly through pitching.

Start by sending a DM pitch explaining your business, highlighting your audience’s interests, and showing them why you would be the perfect account/person to represent the brand.

2. E-Commerce Store

Besides collaborating with other brands, you could also sell your own products.

Whether you have digital products or physical products, you can promote them to your community generating revenue in the process.

I’ve sold many of my digital products through my Instagram.

My community there is my biggest supporter and I’m proud to say that most of the time, my products and services are always sold out!

It doesn’t stop there, I’ve also been able to promote my mom’s delicious baked goods and my sister’s sustainability products as well.

When you have your own products, you don’t really need to worry about reaching out to other brands or getting noticed because you are a brand!

This could be an added advantage when and if you are pitching to a brand or they are approaching you to collaborate.

You can direct your community to your e-commerce website by posting them on your stories. People can click on the link that brings them to the website.

If you can’t share the link on your stories, you can share them on your bio where it’s visible to everyone.

3. Create Merch For Your Personal Brand

Many influencers, pet accounts, and celebrities use this personal branding method to generate income on Instagram.

According to Forbes magazine, Taylor Swift made $200 million from the sale of t-shirts, sweatshirts, and other items with her name and logo from the concert alone.

Many YouTubers and Instagram influencers are also doing the same. They create their own merchandise once they have a certain number of followers and fans.

This guy on Instagram famously known as the red flag and green flag guy runs through a park with giant flags reacting to videos of couples.

He launched his own merch after his content started getting a lot of views and engagement.

So, you don’t have to be famous to do this.

When you have a strong community, you can consider releasing your merchandise such as mugs, phone covers, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and many more.

You can print on demand, which means print when there’s a sale, white label existing products by customizing them with your own designs or branding, and hand-create merch yourself with your own designs.

4. Affiliate Marketing

Another way to earn income from Instagram is through affiliate marketing which is similar to brand deals or sponsorships.

This works pretty simply, you share a unique link or promo/discount code to brands, products, or services with your community.

You will get a commission every time someone clicks on the link and make a purchase.

You can use Linktree to store the links to all the brands, services, and products that you are promoting and display the Linktree link in your Instagram bio.

If you’re a beginner and you have only one brand, you can put the links on your stories or in your bio because Instagram doesn’t allow adding links in a post.

You can also promote by dedicating a post and sharing a promo code tailored to you in the caption.

As I mentioned earlier, apply the same tip where you are selective with the affiliate programs that you’re promoting.

Be selective and make sure it aligns with your brand, identity, & beliefs.

Here are some affiliate programs for beginners

5. Instagram Shopping

If you already have an e-commerce store, you can integrate it with Instagram shop

On top of promoting your products through stories and posts, you can enable this feature on your account to make your products available on the platform itself.

This feature allows your followers to easily browse your products and place their orders on the app itself without clicking on a link that will bring them out of the app.

You can tag products on your posts, and promote directly to your followers to increase your sales.

This feature allows you to put up to 5 shopping tags per image or up to 20 products per multi-image post.

Your followers can see the products tagged with a View Products icon on it.

Once they tap on it, they can see the product description, the name of the products, and also the prices.

If they continue tapping, they will be directed to your Instagram store, where they can see all of your products.

Additionally, they can also use the View on Website button to go to your website and shop from your online store.

You can still set up an Instagram shop without a website

While setting up an Instagram shop is free, if you have the checkout on Instagram feature, then you might want to check on Instagram’s processing fee when customers make purchases directly on the app.

6. Coaching

This is one of the ways I make money on Instagram.

If you’re good at something, you can make money by offering your skills and expertise to help other people.

You can do this even if you have a small and engaged community like mine.

My coaching session is $897, and I provide personal coaching for new and experienced bloggers, giving them a step-by-step plan to start making money from blogging.

Not only that, I also provide an in-depth traffic and blog revenue audit of their blogs as well.

When I release my coaching session which is usually 10 slots, I will always prioritize my Instagram community first. And guess what? It will get booked within less than 24 hours.

So, that was $8970 in sales in a day!

Do people make money on Instagram? YEAH! And I am the pudding in the proof!

7. Sell Your Photos

If you have a knack for good photography skills, then there is a big chance you can make money on Instagram by selling your photos online.

Instagram is primarily a photo-sharing app even though other features such as reels are increasing in popularity now.

Hence, it makes a great place for photographers to monetize their beautiful clicks. So, you can treat your photos like assets and sell them in various ways.

You can use your Instagram account to promote your portfolio. Add a link in your bio for your followers to buy your photos online from platforms such as FOAP, Alamy, and Shutterstock

Another great way to earn income is by promoting yourself as a freelance photographer in your bio.

This way, you will be contacted if there are any events or a need for professional photographers for various projects.

8. Live Badges

I was today years old when I found out that you can earn money via badges from your followers/fans!

If you’re familiar with tip-based features on Twitch and TikTok, then you’re set to earn money by going live on Instagram.

During a live stream, your fans/followers purchase badges (icons of different monetary values) that pay the creator/you.

Your fans/followers can buy badges in increments of 99 cents, $1.99, and $4.99 to support your work.

9. Sell Pre-Loved Items

If you want to clear your closet, you can consider using this platform to sell your old clothes. Many accounts are selling pre-loved items and making money online.

All you need to do is snap a couple of pictures of the items that you want to sell and share in your account.

You can sell clothes, vintage items, furniture, etc, and earn a side income.

Before moving to Ireland permanently, I sold my clothes that I couldn’t bring with me on Instagram and made an income out of it and you can do it too.

While I am not a pre-loved items seller, I leverage the platform to promote my clothes on my Instagram stories and ask anyone interested to send me a DM.

I arranged for the delivery after they made the payment.

That’s it, simple & easy. You can kickstart a pre-loved items business to sell your products like this as well.

10. Paid Subscriptions

Once you have loyal and engaged followers, you can offer them the chance to engage with exclusive content, just for paying followers/subscribers.

Instagram has a subscription program that is open to US creators over 18 who have more than 10,000 subscribers.

Besides that, you can also use third-party tools like Patreon to earn money on Instagram from subscriptions.

Apart from that, you can also use Substack, another subscription option if you want to start a fans-only newsletter.

Of course, for this, you must have a hooked following who will want to subscribe to your paid content.

Also, make sure to provide value to the paid content to make people’s money worthwhile.

Tips To Make Money On Instagram

One of the ways to make money on Instagram is by being engaged, active, and present on the platform.

Here are some tips to make money on Instagram.

1. Special Offers

One of the great ways to attract your followers is by doing a sale. People love sales!

You can choose a special day to do this such as Thanksgiving, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

Offer exclusive deals to your followers within a limited time window. I ran many sales like this, so yes, it works!

You can promote it by sharing it on your stories, posts, and reels to capture people’s attention.

2. Sneak Peak Of New Launches

If you have a new product or service coming up, you can use the countdown or reminder features to give a sneak peak to your audience.

You don’t have to reveal what it is, but you can give them a sneak peek to keep them on their toes.

This will help you to create hype and curiosity for your upcoming products/services for your followers.

I am currently working on a secret project that I can’t reveal yet. I’m working on it from scratch and to be honest, it is not an easy journey for me.

Regardless, I’m keeping my community hooked on this secret project of mine and promised them that it’s going to be very exciting and will be revealed once it’s ready.

You can do something like this to keep your audience updated so that they are aware of what you’re working on and keep their eyes peeled to get it when it’s launched.

3. Schedule Your Instagram Posts

If you’re thinking, do I need to post at a specific time to gain more views and engagement, the answer is apparently a yes.

Paying attention to these small details will ensure that your content reaches your audience every time you post.

According to Buffer, the best time to post on Instagram on weekdays is between 7 am to 8 am.

On weekends people are more engaged on the app on Saturday morning and Sunday evening.

You may want to pay attention to this information because you want to ensure that you’re posting during the golden hour and not when everyone is sleeping.

Instagram also allows you to schedule your posts on the app. You can schedule up to 25 posts daily and up to 75 days in advance.

4. Set A DM Bot

An AI chatbot can help you with your sales process by providing customer service to your followers by answering frequently asked questions about your business.

As these bots don’t sleep, you can feel relieved because you don’t have to be on your phone 24/7 to answer any questions from your potential customers.

Some of the best Instagram chatbots are:

5. Partner Up With Creators And Businesses

This is a great opportunity to promote your brand and business to gain more followers and grab the attention of new audiences.

You can partner up with a creator who shares the same values and beliefs.

As you intend to create a strong and loyal community, it’s crucial to select the right collaboration partners.

Let’s say that now I’m collaborating with a beauty product company, I have a high chance of losing some of my followers because they are following me to learn about blogging and that’s how I started my journey before growing into a business.

They might no longer be interested in my content or my products/services because now I am focussing on something else.

Don’t fall victim to these scammers and be smart and realistic with your decisions and goals.

I built a supportive & loyal community that sees value in my products and services. I once made over $15,000 from my following on Instagram!
