Is copywriting enough for a business to succeed? No.

Copywriters research and come up with simple and clear ways to deliver a message persuasively. The aim is to bring potential customers closer to the desired action, regardless of whether that action is buying a product or subscribing to an email.

This means, that as a brand copywriter your copy is more orientated towards a certain brand staying in the people’s memory and brand recognition.

Thankfully, you don’t need a college degree to become a copywriter, although you can learn if you take marketing classes.
I know copywriters who have taken courses offered by agencies, but they might be expensive (we’re talking about $2000) and you might not want to spend this amount of money right now.
So, as with all things in life, you can get theoretical knowledge with top references in the copywriting world (aka learn from the best), and then you start to practice everything you learn.

Consuming content is a must if you want to become a freelance copywriter. A great way to do it is by subscribing to websites, blogs, or magazines you´re interested in, and analyzing their marketing strategies with a critical eye.
You were attracted to them for a reason. Find out critically what makes them so compelling, how can their work be improved, re-write their sites with online editing tools (such as the Chrome extension “Edit this website”), analyze the frequency and structure of their emails, etc.
2. Learn Persuasive Writing
As was mentioned above, copywriting involves persuasive writing.
Let’s face it: nobody wants a salesperson screaming at you “buy this now!”
It’s the same with copywriting. You need to persuade the potential client into doing what you want and influence their actions in a way that will benefit them and your client.
This is regardless of the product, job or industries out there…the sky’s the limit. For starters, you can read these:

A landing page is, by definition, the page where potential clients, well, land, when they come from a different site, social media, etc.
When you see an ad on YouTube or Facebook, and you follow their call-to-action (CTA) buttons, they will take you to a landing page.
In many cases, the landing page will be the first thing a potential client sees from you (or your client), so it’s important to have a clean and clear message that connects, engages, and persuades them to take action.
Write them well, and the business has more chances to do great.
What kind of pages can perform as a landing page? It depends, but usually, the Homepage, Service pages, Sales pages, E-commerce product pages, or the whole web if we’re talking about a One Page (where every section of a common website is shown on only one page.)
- A Value Proposition
This is a one or two-sentence statement that explains what a business offers, how it is different from the competition, and who it is intended for.
It’s a very important copywriting element, and it can be challenging to write it at first, but you’ll get the hang of that with practice.
- An Advertisement
Ad copywriting is now more important than ever in this digital world we’re living in.
It’s incredibly hard to grasp someone’s attention in the midst of their scrolling, so the ad has to be catchy and there always has to be a CTA involved.
There are great opportunities for you if you are specialized as an Ad copywriter, so learning how to write ads can be an amazing investment. Remember to study the Ad policy of Facebook and Google, so your ads don’t have any issues.
- An Email
Not just a random email, though. Email marketing is an amazing way to increase sales and generate engagement with your audience.
Remember: it’s entirely possible that someone that could be your ideal client, doesn’t have a social media account. But everybody has an email, am I right?
So, it is vital for you to engage your audience via email, get to know them, and generate a relationship of trust with them. This is so they will be more inclined to buy your product or services in the future.

Now that you have the tools to get started, it’s time to start writing. There’s no better way of learning copy than by writing.
At first, try looking for clients that will allow you to learn and grow steadily, even if that means you won´t be earning a lot at the beginning. Practicing and getting experience is the thing to do now.
Start writing your business copy, aka, your website and social media posts. You will need to tell the world you’re a copywriter now, so it only makes sense to invest in that.
If you have friends with businesses, you can write their copy in exchange for feedback. If they like your writing, you can also exchange them for testimonials. They may even refer you to other business owners and help you spread the word that there’s a new copywriter in town ;).
With these, and some writing samples, you can build a freelance copywriter portfolio of your writing samples in case future clients ask you.
Then you can go for paying clients, although remember at the beginning what matters the most is the experience you will acquire.
Does that mean you have to work for $20?
Nope. But don’t expect a senior copywriter salary at first. Be patient, learn, become good, and you’ll be rating high numbers in the blink of an eye.
How to start getting more experience:
- Cold-pitching (an email to a stranger that can become a potential buyer of your service)
- Potentiate your online and offline network (tell everyone in your network you just became a copywriter)
- Pitch job listings (Upwork, Craiglist, Problogger Job Board, etc.) (pitch to obs listed in those marketplaces for freelancers)
After that stage of your early career as a copywriter, you can start designing a way to bring leads (clients) to you, instead of hunting for them. It will take a year or so, but those times will come.
The best ways to build a recurrent leads channel (clients coming consistenly your way without you going out to find them) is through:
- Guest post blogging

5. Get Organized
As a new freelancer, you’ll need to be ultra-organized. It will feel overwhelming at first, but that’s ok, it means you’re giving your all!
- First, tackle the legal side of things by getting a contract template to use with your clients.
- Get your finances in order, so you can know what to rate, according to your needs.
- Get a job platform to work with your client (for example, Slack or Trello). Do NOT share your phone line with your clients. If you want to maintain phone communication, get a business line. You’ll thank me later 😉
- Create a schedule and stick to it.
- Create a workspace at home. While it may be tempting, don´t do your work in every single room of your house. A dedicated workspace will create boundaries between your homelife and your work life.

You need to get involved with a product or service that you believe in. Otherwise, it’s going to be difficult for you to sell it.
7. Find A Niche
Finding a niche as a copywriter is as versatile as the career itself.
You can find a niche according to a certain kind of product or service, for example:

You can niche down to the type of copywriting you like the most or the one that you think will bring you the most profits. These include:

Why is it advisable to find a niche?
As with blogging, once you find a niche and create content related to it, you become an expert or reference on the topic.
In the beginning, you can start as a generalist, doing a little bit of everything. This will help you to know what kind of client you like to work with the most, what projects you love or hate, etc.
But, copywriting involves a great deal of research, so it´s not a surprise that niching down is one of the best ways to increase your rates over time.
Is it necessary to niche down?
No. Some people get bored easily if they do the same thing time and again. It all depends on your personality traits and the topics you´re most passionate about.

Yes. It will help you focus, have a clear marketing strategy, and make more money.

Copywriters, as I mentioned before, are those who write the content used to market a service or product.
Their work is like having a salesperson 24/7/365 on whatever platform you have.
As a freelance copywriter, you choose the clients you want to work with, you set your rates, and you’re responsible for creating a schedule and stick to it.
You´re a one-person show (unless you collaborate with an agency for some projects).

1. Creating Campaigns And Ads Concepts

Advertisements for Google and Facebook, emails, billboards are included here. It does require skills that you´ll gain with time, and it´s important not to sound like you´re directly selling.

This type of copywriting is directed towards general product consumers (not business people).

On YouTube, for example, they are those short videos displayed before the actual video you want to watch. What the people in the video are saying, was probably written by a copywriter.

Think about it: every single online business owner needs a copy to sell their products, the stronger, the better. But not every single one of them is passionate about writing the way you do, so they will hire someone else.
It’s a win-win situation.
2. They Are Needed
Again, many businesses don’t have time or skills to write, advertise, study their ideal clients, and sell all at the same time.

Writing and speaking abilities are a must for copywriters.
Those people that always seem to entertain even in their Facebook posts have great communication skills. So if you have it in you, that’s amazing because this is what this job is about.
2. They Are Excessively Curious
If you´re the type of person that wants to know everything about anything, copywriting might be for you.
Copywriters are constantly moved by learning more about different things. They just can´t stay on the surface, they delve deep into a topic with everything they have.
If you´re that person that does tons of research before playing “Dungeons and Dragons” or similar strategy games, and figures out everything before even opening the game board, you´re on a good path.
3. They Are Hard-Working People
Copywriters work hard. Especially at the beginning of their career path. You will have to put in a lot of effort to practice time and learn those skills that you´re still developing.
Sometimes you might have to sacrifice a few hours of sleep because you need to deliver a job.
You need to be disciplined and organized in the few stages of your career as a copywriter so when the snow-ball comes (aka, your hard work starts to pay off and you have a lot of clients knocking at your door), you´re prepared and the whole process goes as smoothly as possible.

Do You Need A Degree To Be A Freelance Copywriter?
The answer is No. If you already have a marketing background, that’s awesome! But it’s not necessary.
Follow the process I mentioned above and you can become a freelance copywriter.
How Much Can A Freelance Copywriter Charge?
This depends on many factors and truly, there isn’t much trustworthy data about freelance copywriter rates, but you can get an idea by reading this post.
Before setting your rates, you need to take into account your costs of living and how much you invest in your business: rent, health insurance, advertising if you do it, hosting for your website, etc.
Also, you need to consider that as a freelancer your job won’t be consistent until you create a system that gets you recurrent clients.
You can make $50 one week and $400 the next, since freelance copywriters usually charge per project, instead of hours, unless they work specific projects with a client, and that project will take months.
It all depends on the project. Two projects cannot be rated the same way.
Additionally, you´ll be charging as a junior copywriter for a while, until you´re experienced enough to increase your rate.
If there is a high demand for your services, you can increase your rates. Many copywriters make six figures a year!
Writing, and writing + providing strategy to a client, is not the same and it doesn’t have the same value. If a business has a problem and you know how to solve it, you can charge more.
How To Get Clients As A Freelance Copywriter?
If you’ve been wondering how to get clients as a copywriter, I’ve got your back.
At the beginning, you’ll try to grab every single one of them. Over time, you will become picky and that’s ok. It means you´re growing as a freelancer.
As a result, if everyone sets lower rates, you might end up working for pennies. Which is not the point at all.
If you still want to promote yourself there, you will need to clearly state your value proposition (what makes you different than the rest) to catch the client’s eye.
- Create a system that gets you recurring clients.
- Try to develop long-term relationships with your current clients.
- Come up with a contract to work with clients on a contract basis. This is important for you to be protected by law in case a client doesn’t want to pay.
- Always ask for a percentage of the money in advance (ex. 50%) before getting to work, and the other half after reviewing the work between the two of you and before delivering and giving up the intellectual property.
Now, let’s take a look at how to find copywriting clients, so you can start making a living:
1. Tell Everyone You Know
Yes, it is that easy. Think about how many people in your network are business owners or work as a designer or in a marketing agency. Send them a message to let them know you´re now a copywriter. They will either hire you or refer you to other clients.
Post it on your social media as well.
2. Join Facebook Groups:
You can either join freelance groups or industry groups. The former is where your competition is, and it´s ok for getting referrals and even jobs that people might not have time to take.
The latter is where your ideal client is, and that’s where you have to aim. Industry includes every niche you can dream of, so it’s worth giving them a chance, especially if you want to specialize at the beginning.
This is another great place to find clients, being the most known professional network. Businesses in need of copywriters will post it there and you can promote yourself there as well.
Sending emails to strangers to get a job can be nerve-wracking at the beginning. You also need to send enough emails to get one open, so it will need effort.
Remember, many people don’t know what to write about on their websites or they do it wrong, so you have a chance of your email being answered at the very least.
This one is quite simple, but it will require a small inversion, and it’s about consistency.
You will need a freelance copywriting website and an email marketing strategy (sending emails consistently to subscribers to promote your services to them).
Your website doesn’t have to be super fancy at first, and you can even have just one page for promoting yourself. For example, this is my freelance writing page, simple but effective.
Within a year, you’ll want to change everything or have a full website, so it would be good to start simple and save money.
You can have a lead magnet for potential clients to download by subscribing to your email, and then you can start to sell your services there.
A lead magnet is something you gift to your readers in exchange for their data, such as the freebies that bloggers give you that require you to introduce your name and email.
It’s a slow method at first, but eventually, it becomes an endless source of clients.
This one will bring you the highest number of clients. If you do your job well and your clients are satisfied, they will recommend you to friends and business owners they might know.
Your reputation will work for you!
7. Content Marketing + SEO
Having your blog and website is a perfect way to increase your clients by delivering SEO-optimized content.
You should include keywords that help you rank higher on Google and once the potential clients visit your web, offer them a lead magnet (a checklist, a guide, an e-book, an email course, etc.) to turn them into subscribers and sell your services via email marketing.
SEO will also help you to attract clients on LinkedIn.
If you prefer, you can have a podcast, a Youtube channel, you can write guest posts on high-ranked blogs, etc.
8. Paid Advertising
Although not many copywriters do this, you can also consider paying to advertise your services.
You will pay a publisher (such as a website owner or a search engine like Google) each time someone clicks or view your ad in a search result. The ads are displayed on websites, social media, or other digital platforms.
Is Copywriting A Solid Job?
It is! You will essentially become a business owner!
You’ll set up your website, generate lead magnets, promote yourself, pay taxes, pitch, exchange messages with existing clients, research, etc., just as any other business.
The good news is, the more success you have as a freelance copywriter, the less you’ll write. You will handpick your customers and set high rates because your writing skills are not the only reason you are being hired. Your strategy and niche knowledge will be valued as well.
