    What Is SEO?

Ah yes! The all-important question – what exactly is SEO?

Let’s start with the basics – SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

When you search for something on Google (does anyone even use any other search engine?) chances are you will find what you are looking for on the first page of the search results.

Very rarely will you move on to the second page

In fact, there is a rumor that the second page of Google is the best place to hide dead bodies because no one ever goes there!

    Okay, let’s get serious.

The basic aim of SEO is to get your website or your blog on the first page of Google’s search results or in the top 10 of the search results listings.

This immediately increases the chances of traffic being driven to your blog.

To get on the first page of Google’s search results, you need to make sure that Google likes your blog. And how do you do that?

You guessed it – you SEO the heck out of your travel blog!

Top SEO Tips For Travel Blogs In 2022

There are plenty of SEO strategies that you can implement to increase traffic to your travel blog.

While they can seem pretty intimidating when you are just starting out, there are some basic essentials that you need to implement if you are looking to increase traffic to your travel website.

Let’s explore each of them in detail.

P.S. If you find these tips useful and want to learn more about SEO for a travel blog, you can check out my SEO Success for Beginners masterclass.

I cover all of these tips and much more in plenty of detail and you will have your travel blog SEO ready in no time!

    1. Learn How To Do Keyword Research

This is probably one of the most important SEO tips for travel websites that you will come across.

Keyword research is essentially the process of identifying the exact phrases that people enter into the Google search bar.

The idea is to use these keywords strategically in your travel blog and your travel blog posts so that when users enter these phrases, your posts match what they are looking for and show up on the first page of the search results.

You are now probably wondering how exactly to do keyword research.

One of the easiest ways to get started is to go right to the source – the Google search bar.

Use the predictive search feature to get an idea of what people are looking for.

For example, if you were to type in “best things to do in egypt”, you will get a dropdown menu of suggestions that are related to this topic.

These are good indications of what people are searching for on Google.

If you feel like you are ready to invest in a keyword research tool, then one of the best ones out there is KeySearch. It is also probably one of the easiest keyword research tools to look for travel SEO keywords.

NOTE- It is 17$ per month but if you use my discount code and referral link, (KSDISC), you get 20% off, also a free 1 month trial!

All you need to do is enter your keyword and KeySearch will tell you how frequently that keyword is searched for. This is also known as search volume. Keysearch will also let you know how many sites use that keyword. This is known as keyword competition.

    travel SEO keywords

The aim is to find keywords that have a high search volume and a low competition score. I won’t deny it. It is a delicate balance.

That being said, with some experience, you will be able to identify the appropriate keywords in no time!

    2. Use Your Keywords Effectively

Once you have identified your keywords, you will need to use them strategically. Your keywords can be contained in:

    • Your travel blog name
    • Your travel blog posts
    • In the descriptions of any pictures or videos in your travel blog

If you are writing a specific blog post, at the very minimum, make sure that your keyword or key phrase is reproduced exactly in:

    • The title of the blog post
    • The URL of the blog post
    • In the first paragraph of your blog post

    3. Match User Intent As Early As Possible

    best affiliate travel programs

User intent refers to the goal that the user wants to achieve when they type out a search query into the Google search bar.

When writing a blog post, make sure that you address the user’s question as soon as you can.

How many times have you looked for a recipe online, clicked on the search results only to have to keep scrolling to the end to get to the actual recipe?

That is a great example of how user intent is NOT matched as early as possible.

If users do not find what they are looking for as quickly as possible, they are going to go back to the search results page.

Google will know this and is then likely to reduce your ranking on its search results.

    4. Install and Use Yoast SEO

Yoast SEO is a fantastic tool (that is FREE) that guides you on how well your blog post is optimized as you are typing it out.

    seo for travel blog

It is available as a plugin on WordPress. You can install it and immediately get started on optimizing your travel blog!

Among other things, the Yoast SEO tool will indicate to you if:

    • Your post is readable as per SEO standards
    • You have used your keywords effectively
    • Your article is long enough

These indicators are extremely helpful so that you don’t blindly type out your blog post only to find that you have to make tons of changes because it is not optimized.

There is a paid version and a free version. The latter is perfect if you are just getting started with your travel blog SEO.

    5. Use Google Analytics

Google Analytics is your best friend when you are implementing SEO for travel blogs. This tool tracks all relevant data about the users who visit your site

    travel SEO

Don’t be alarmed by the technical data that you may see at first. It is important to remember that this data can help you to optimize your travel blog.

    The information contained here includes:

    • How long a user spends on your travel website
    • How they were directed to your travel blog
    • What time they visited your travel site
    • Which pages they spent the most time on

You may be wondering how this data helps with SEO.

Well, from this data, you will know which of your travel blog posts perform better. You can then delve into the posts that are not doing as well and implement strategies such as using more appropriate travel blog SEO keywords.

    6. Secure Your Travel Blog

If you look at the top of your screen right now, in the search/URL bar, you will see a little lock. That is an indication that the website you are on is secure.

Google is particular about cybersecurity and they want to protect users from any cyber crimes or phishing websites.

As such, it is important to show Google that your travel website is legitimate and has all the relevant cybersecurity measures in place.

You can do this by installing an SSL Certificate. This will usually be available from your blog host.

Google is more likely to direct users to your travel website if they are aware that it is secure.

    7. Publish Content Consistently At The Beginning

    SEO tips for travel websites

This is probably one of the best travel SEO tips. If you are running a travel blog, or any blog for that matter, it is important to be consistent in the publishing of your content.

Try to aim for a new blog post twice a week. However, if you truly cannot manage that, then at least once a week.

Publishing consistently will let Google know that your travel website is active. This will increase the chances of Google sending more visitors to your site!

Note- Once you have built up a large bank of content (like 100 posts), you won’t have to post as frequently or as much. You can then focus your efforts on updating old content. The hard work is at the beginning then you can cruise and relax later. (speaking from personal experience! )

    8. Publish High-Quality Content

Now, just because you have to publish frequently, it doesn’t mean that you can randomly type stuff out and hit that publish button!

Google prides itself in directing its users to quality content. And so you must give Google that quality!

Some easy travel SEO tips you can implement to produce high-quality travel blog content include:

    • Ensuring the content of your post matches the title of your post
    • Writing clearly and in an organized manner
    • Writing long-form content with a minimum of 1000 words
    • Making your post easy to read by using short paragraphs and sentences
    • Using high-quality images
    • Ensuring that your travel blog post is error-free. You can use a free tool like Grammarly to ensure that you don’t have any grammatical or spelling errors in your post.

    9. Write Related Posts

If Google thinks that you are a point of authority on a particular topic or area of interest, then there is a higher chance of more traffic being driven to your travel blog

To prove to Google that you are indeed a strong reference, write multiple posts on the same topic.

Of course, this does not mean that you cut, copy, and paste the same text! If you do this, Google may flag you for duplicate content and penalize you by not showing your page at all!

Rather, write variations of a particular topic.

For example, if you have made a recent trip to Paris and want to write about it, don’t squeeze all your experiences into one post.

A good SEO strategy for your travel website would be to break it up into the following related blog posts:

    • The Best Ways To Get To Paris
    • The Best Picnic Spots In Paris
    • Nightlife In Paris
    • Historical Spots In Paris

These posts are all about Paris but each post covers a specific area.

The more related posts you have, the higher the chances of Google recognizing your travel blog as a strong point of reference for anything to do with Paris.

    10. Internal Linking

Once you have about 15 to 20 blog posts on your travel blog, you can start creating links to other posts on your blog that are related to the blog post that you have just written.

For example, in your article titled “The Best Ways To Get To Paris”, you can link your other Paris-themed articles.

Internal linking helps with SEO for travel websites because it teaches Google more about what your blog is all about.

When Google understands your blog well, it is likely to rank it higher on the search results page.

    11. External Linking

This refers to providing links in your blog post to other websites.

Google sees external links as being more influential than internal links and can almost certainly increase your travel site’s rankings on Google.

The more trustworthy or well-established the external links on your blog are, the more Google will trust your travel website in turn.

So if you have external links to Forbes, The New York Times, or The Wall Street Journal, Google is going to love you! And that’s the whole point of implementing SEO for your travel blog!

    12. Improve Your Page Speed

    SEO for your travel website

Don’t you hate it when you’re trying to visit a site and it takes forever to load? Well, Google doesn’t like that very much either!

I won’t lie, it does get a tiny bit technical to do this.

But if you are hosting your blog on WordPress or Bluehost, you will be given tips and tricks on how to get this done.

If you’re interested in a more in-depth guide on how to speed up your page, check out this great article from The Daily Egg

Tip- You can check your site speed on this free speed test tool.  Your site should load no more than 4 seconds. If it does, speak to your host to improve the speed.

    13. Optimize Your Pictures

We’re not just talking about using high-quality images here.

When optimizing pictures for SEO, some of the things that you can do include:

    • Using the right format. JPEG and JPG are a couple of SEO preferred ones
    • Use your target keywords to label your images
    • Use alternative text to describe your images so that Google can accurately recognize your images
    • Don’t use PNG formats for your pictures. They slow down your site loading time.

These SEO strategies are just the tip of the iceberg. For more detailed instructions, check out this extremely useful article on how to optimize images for SEO

    14. Add Videos To Your Blog Posts

    seo for travel blog

It can’t be denied that a substantial number of people prefer to watch videos than to read an entire blog post.

With this in mind, plenty of travel bloggers upload an accompanying video on the blog post which discusses the essentials of the blog post itself.

This helps to direct more traffic to your travel blog.

Do ensure that you don’t upload the video on the blog post itself as this may slow down the loading time of your page.

Rather, embed the video into the blog post.

Most videos are hosted on YouTube so you can obtain the embedding link from there. You can do this by following these steps:

    1. Click “Share” on the bottom right of the YouTube video

    2. Click “Embed”

    3. Copy and paste the link to your blog post

    15. Refresh Older Content

It is important to know that SEO trends evolve over time.

Blog posts can be likened to cars. You need to maintain and look after them to ensure they remain functional and run smoothly.

As such, every few months, you may want to do a quick check using your keyword research tool to see if your keywords are still ranking well and if the content is still relevant

If they are not, go back to your old blog posts, tweak them a little bit, and refresh the content.

I understand that this can be tedious so don’t get overwhelmed by it. It will be worth the time that you spend.

From experience, I can tell you that traffic to my blog increased by 40% once I made the effort to refresh my older posts to make them SEO compliant!

As you can see, implementing SEO for travel bloggers is a constant work in progress!

    16. Guest Post

As a travel blogger, guest blogging is a key SEO strategy for your travel website.

Essentially, guest blogging is when you write for other blogs, ideally for the best travel blog names such as Nomadic Matt, The Travel Episodes, and Anywhere We Roam

In most circumstances, when you write a blog post for another travel website, your own travel blog will be linked to.

Think about it as getting your name and travel website out there.

This in turn will expose your blog to a brand new audience, including people who may have never heard of your travel website before.
