What Is Qkids?
Qkids is an interactive learning platform founded in 2015 that connects English teachers from the United States and Canada to young learners aged between 6 and 12 from China.
The students have different levels of language proficiency and they learn through a patented game-based learning approach.
As a Qkids teacher, you will get to guide your students through a curriculum of fun and engaging gaming-based adventures from the comfort of your home.
It is ideal for you, if you are looking for a way to make an extra income, as the way the work environment is structured is not ideal for teachers looking for a full-time job.
How Do You Become a Qkids Teacher?
You just want to apply to Qkids and make that extra income you have always dreamed of?Please note that, Qkids teacher requirements are notorious for being strict.
So, if you don’t want to waste your time read on to check whether you are qualified to teach with Qkids.
Qkids Basic Requirements
1. Be a Native Speaker
Qkids is somewhat pickier than other ESL online companies on this point.
It is no mystery that many online English teaching companies require that teachers be native speakers.
However, some of them like Vipkid turn a blind eye as long as you have a neutral accent and are eligible to work in the US and Canada.
That does not seem to be the case with Qkids, since their value proposition is ‘Learn Early With Native Speakers’.
During the screening process, you will need to declare:
- That you are based in the US or Canada
- If you need a visa to stay in the US or Canada
On top of that, you will need to submit your passport or another ID after the screening stage along with a self-introduction video – more on this later – where you will need to say where you are from.
As with other online ESL companies, you must have some teaching experience and if you select ‘No Experience’ during the screening process, your application will fail.
So don’t click the ‘no experience’ option !
As you can see below, a new field will open up if you select any option except for ‘None of the above’.
The definition of experience with kids is pretty broad. That is why the option ‘I have taught children in a context other than school classroom’ is conveniently added for you.
If you have some life experience under your belt, this requirement may not be a deal-breaker.
Think of a job, an internship or even a volunteer gig where you had to teach something.
It could be any of the following:
- Teaching dance classes
- Training employees
- Summer Camp Staff/Counseling
As long as you have some experience teaching any skill and dealing with children, write that down and you are good to go.
Don’t qualify still?
Other companies do not require that you have any experience. Check out my guide on how to become an English teacher with no experience.
3.Eligibility To Work In The US and Canada
You must be a native speaker and have the legal right to work in the US and Canada, hence you must be from those countries.
Since 2019, the company stopped partnering with Californian teachers due to new regulation that was passed in California regarding independent contractors.
However, some accounts are reporting that the company has not discontinued work with teachers from California. If you are from California, you want to try and see if that is the case for you.
As mentioned above, you also must be based in the US or Canada, because their servers do not work properly outside China, the US or Canada.
If you want to hit the road and start travelling abroad, you can try using a legitimate VPN (or not – some teachers reported that they continued teaching with Qkids, even while travelling in other countries without any problems).
Alternatively, you could apply to other ESL companies that do not have requirements related to your physical location.
Qkids Education Requirements
Most English teaching jobs require that you have earned at least a Bachelor’s degree.
‘That’s wrong, I am an excellent teacher and I don’t have a degree!’.
That’s a fair statement, but that’s how it is. The Ministry of Education in China has raised the standards for online teaching and that is a critical factor for them.
This requirement is non-negotiable and Qkids will check for your degree since you will need to upload a copy of your official degree cert.
There are no two ways about it.
The good news is that your degree could be in an unrelated field such as Engineering or Architecture.
Don’t have a degree? It seems that they also hire students who are in the process of getting a degree.
Not currently enrolled in a degree course? That’s fine! You need to look for other opportunities.
5. A Teaching Certificate
These days most online English teaching companies require that you have at least a teaching certificate or a teaching license (in which case you can command a higher pay).
Getting an accredited TESOL/TEFL 120-hour-certification is not a challenging feat.
You will get your certificate in a couple of weeks and it will boost your resume and give you bonus points on your next applications.
Let’s TEFL is a great option. I took it myself and I could not recommend it more. It’s accredited and accepted by online schools.
6. Qkids Technical Requirements
To teach with Qkids you must adhere to their tech requirements as well. In other words, you must have (at minimum):
- A computer with a webcam
- A headset with a mic
- Stable Internet connection (ethernet cable preferred)
Teaching from a computer (Windows 7 (or above) and MacOS 10.9 (or above).
is a non-negotiable requirement. This might be a pain for Ipad lovers, but there is no way around that.
It is critical that you can teach with a clear background and good lighting. You can use a desk lamp or get yourself a selfie ring light with a phone holder if you want to stand out.
You must also have a stable Internet connection. Even if your Wi-fi works fine for you, it is always nice to have a backup plan in case things go sideways, as timing is critical to teaching online.
Therefore an ethernet cable might come in handy.
You don’t want to panic because your Internet randomly disconnects, once you are midway through a lesson.
Qkids Computer Requirements
Before you can start teaching with Qkids you’ll need to submit a screenshot of your computer specs, to make sure that they adhere to the computer specs needed for Qkids.
Qkids computer specs:
- Speed(you can test your speed here):
- Minimum upload speed: 2Mbps
- Minimum download speed: 4Mbps
- Qkids System requirements:
- Cpu: dual-core 2.0GHz or above
- Cpu model: i5/i7 series (for laptops)
- Memory: 2Gb or above
7. Minimum Weekly Commitment
Is ultimate flexibility your end goal? Then, Qkids might not be the right fit for you.
Many ESL companies require minimum hours, but that’s not the case with all of them. Before applying you must be aware of Qikids minimum hours.
Qkids expect all teachers to work (at minimum) 6 hours each week. You are expected to open slots during Beijing peak time:
- Weekdays: 6 pm – 9 pm
- Weekend: 10 am – 6 pm
That’s not too bad, though. You can squeeze that into your schedule to fit your needs and other commitments.Besides, some reviews say that 6 hours a week are not always available during the low season.
Also, should you need to take some time off you definitely can, as long as you let them know with two weeks’ notice.
They are very flexible on this and they will allow you to take time off whenever you need it.
Oh, you are booked by the system, not by the parents or students. You can rest assured that taking time off will NOT affect your booking rate.
On top of that, unlike other companies, Qkids does not have a strict cancellation policy.
They seem to realize that life happens sometimes.
Therefore, you just need to inform the company 6 hours in advance and it will not count as a penalty in your monthly salary calculation.
You have 6 cancellations per contract, so if life throws you a curveball you should be fine.
8.Qkids Background Check
As stated on their website, Qkids encourages all contractors to undergo a company-approved background check.
Two areas will be reviewed: criminal records and proof of educational background.
That’s it. If you qualify for Qkids, apply here!
Does Qkids Hire Only Experienced Native Speakers?
Yes, they do. No sugar coating this. If you aren’t a native speaker, but you meet all other requirements and have a North American accent, you can TRY to give it a go.
You will probably waste your time applying, though. Your time is precious and valuable.
What Qualifications Do you Need for Qkids?
- A Bachelor’s Degree
- A Teaching certificate
What’s The Hiring Process Like?
Here a list of all the documents you need to include in your Qkids application and all the other steps of the hiring process:
- Submit required docs
- A Screenshot of Computer SPECS
- 1-2 minute introduction video
- Go through the initial screening stage
- Do a demo interview
- Do a second demo interview
- Do trial classes
- Get a background check
- Sign a contract
Although, it may seem like a lot of steps it usually does not take that long.
Before you do the first demo lesson you must submit all the relevant documents, including your resume and a 1-2 minute self-introduction video.
In the intro video, you will need to introduce yourself, describe why you want to become a teacher and read a children’s story.
It is best if you can practice your speech a few times before uploading it to Youtube. Use your hands a lot and strive to be as silly as you can!
Tip: It is key that you come across as funny and lively. So, fill your words with enthusiasm and put on your best genuine smile. For some reason, the kids can tell if you are not genuine!
Could use some inspiration? Check out this video.
As for your resume, you could use a Word file or create a more visually appealing document with software like Canva.
What matters is that you emphasize your teaching background and your technological-related skills. It is an online gig, so your digital literacy does matter. Travel experience is a nice have.
Once you pass the screening stage it is time to do your demo classes.
You don’t know what a demo class is? Keep reading.
How To Ace The QKids Interview?
During the first demo interview, you will showcase your teaching skills and knowledge of the QKids platform.
At this stage, the interviewer’s aim is to check whether you can interact effectively with students using the Qkid platform. Qkids makes it easy for applicants to pass, BUT you must study the material beforehand.
In the second interview, you will be asked to solve a few potential challenges in the classroom and your teaching skills will be evaluated even further.
At this stage, you must be aware of how to correct a student and give out rewards (diamonds). Encourage your students, especially when they get it wrong ‘Nice try!’ and praise them for every single correct answer ‘Good job! Excellent!’.
During the second demo class make your personality shine through, as that’s what they want for their students.
If you need some inspiration, check out these videos:
What Is The Trial Class Period?
You will be teaching 2 to 5 lessons with actual students and you’ll get feedback from QKids and the students’ parents. You will be given all the material and some time (around 1-2 days) to practice it in the classroom.
The classes are paid (8USD+ bonus) and you will get some feedback.
Arrive on time (at least 2 minutes earlier). If you don’t, the class will be automatically given to another teacher.
Tip: Make sure to be ready at least 5 minutes before the starting time and start interacting with the students immediately.
This is the right time to kiss your shy self goodbye. Ask their name, be funny, sing a song, find your own way to be as engaging as you possibly can!
However, once the lesson starts don’t waste time and while going through the slides make sure that you have enough time to cover all the material.
You want to end the class on the last slide without skipping anything. So, keep an eye on the clock! Need extra tips? Here is a video for you.
How Long Is The Qkids Application Process For Qkids?
- Screening stage: it usually takes 3-4 business days.
- Demo Interviews and trial classes: it usually takes a couple of weeks
- Background check: it takes a couple of days.
Altogether, it can take from two weeks to just over a month.
Qkids: Is It Legit?
Teaching online is legit. Some companies pay peanuts, but Qkids does not fall into that category and it is a real, reliable company.
How Much Do You Make with QKids?
Their base rate is 8USD per class, which adds up to 20USD per hour.
On top of that, you could be making 100USD for every successful Qkids teacher that signs up through your referral link.
When Will I Be Paid? What About Taxes?
You’ll receive payments on the 15th of each month.
Funds will be deposited by wire transfer directly to your bank account and the cost of the wire transfer fee will be covered by Qkids – don’t take it for granted!
You’ll need to handle the payment of taxes on your own. Put aside a fixed amount each month for next spring!
Why Teach With Qkids?
Teaching with Qkids is not for everyone and you must meet all the requirements mentioned above to sign the contract.
However, if you do qualify, bear in mind that this is a sweet gig that comes with a lot of perks:
