30 Types Of Ideas For First Blog Post For Beginners
Coming up with ideas for first blog post for beginners can be a tricky task but if you realize from the lists above, most of these ideas are built around a few core themes.
If you prefer coming up with your own posts from scratch, then you can think of a topic and then use these guiding themes to come up with a blog post idea.
1. How-To Guides
Everyone’s guilty of searching the web when they don’t know how to do something. Some people prefer a video guide, some prefer written guides. That’s where you come in!
If you’ve searched for how to do something online, found some ideas, and then realized you had a better or quicker way of doing things, why not compile those tips into your own how-to guide?
You might just help someone in need just like yourself – like what I’m doing right now!
Listicles are widely popular because they provide content at a glance for busy and time-starved people nowadays. Plus with listicles, you get a whole series of content at one go – who doesn’t love more information, right?
To get a sense of what is a trending topic to create a list for, I like to look at what people are talking about on social media. Or I also use AskthePublic which looks at what types of questions people ask around topics.
3. Question & Answer
Aside from creating a list, you can also delve into individual questions and answers from the same resource.
So for example, if I was keen on the topic of recycling, aside from writing a list about types of recycling, I realize that people are asking about where all our recycled items go. Trust me when I say – you can definitely write a full article about where recyclables go!
Plus it’s a great complement to your listicle too.
4. Product Reviews
Now, have you ever searched for reviews on a product before you bought it, or asked your friends for their thoughts on it?
If you find your readers frequently asking you for your advice on certain items such as the best laptop to buy or even which shoes are good for running, then you might just be seen as a trustworthy source to your friends or your readers in this area!
The best part is, some products and sites have affiliate marketing programs that allow your readers to get a small discount and you also get a small commission every time someone uses your link or code.
It’s a win-win for everyone – they get trusted advice and a discount code and you get a small bonus for referring them.
5. Life Hacks
Life hacks are all the rage on TikTok nowadays but hey, not everyone’s on TikTok.
You have busy people searching for little ways and hacks to make mundane chores and tasks a little quicker.
If you spot something on social media and you realize, this could be something my readers might want to know then try writing an article around that hack and more. Just remember to give credit to where it’s due!
6. Tips And Tricks
This is along the same lines as life hacks, except that these could come from your own lived experiences.
Say you’re a seasoned traveler who has picked up your own tips on how to travel solo as a single female. You can share those tips in these posts like I did here and here – aspiring solo female travelers would be so thankful!
Have you ever found yourself asking your friends for ideas on where to go or what to have when you’re planning a trip? Or have you also done a lot of research before a trip, only to realize you didn’t get to use everything, but would love to share the information you’ve gathered?
Itineraries are great for sharing your own travel plans, experience, or to share your ideas on destination highlights. Just think about how much time you’re saving your readers by helping them ‘plan’ their holidays – they’ll keep coming back for more ideas and entries!
8. Trip Reviews
Sometimes, you may also want to give your reviews of a new destination, accommodation, or tourist destination. If the experience was particularly good or bad, you can take a deep dive into how your trip went.
Think of this as a Google or Tripadvisor review, but especially on your blog, tailored for your readers because you know best the exact information that they need.
Enough said – who doesn’t love a good bargain?
If you come across a good deal or are aware there’s a massive sale season coming up like Black Friday or Cyber Monday, you could do a list of sites and accompanying discount codes. Because, sharing is caring, right?
If you’re trying to look for blog post ideas for lifestyle blogs, then sharing your own real-life experiences is a great way to develop content for your blog.
If you’re a first-time mom preparing for the arrival of your child, an in-depth look into your preparation stage would definitely be useful for other moms-to-be.
11. Pros And Cons
If you’re doing product reviews, having a pros and cons blog post would be another one to consider. Besides reviewing one product, you could review a few products that you previously considered and then share the pros and cons of these products.
For all you know, your readers might be looking at different selection criteria from you and a con to you might just be a pro to them!
12. Lessons Learnt
Almost like experiences, except you provide very clear lessons learned from your experiences so your readers go away with some useful advice that they could apply if they come across something similar.
For example, an article on five lessons you learned from planning your own wedding would help brides-to-be tremendously!
13. Time-Based Roundups
You can still do this as a beginner blogger! These are great for finance, lifestyle, and travel blogs where you can do a weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual round-up of trends, the industry, or what you have done.
Examples include a year in review of blog earnings, quarterly updates on travels, or a monthly round-up of expenses and savings.
14. Free Resources
If it’s free it’s for me! And I want to share these free resources with my readers too, because let’s face it, as a beginner blogger, you don’t want to be spending too much money on fancy tools and resources before the money rolls in.
If you’re a travel blogger, you could write an article about sites with free travel planning resources. As a lifestyle blogger, you could share some sites with free planners and productivity tools. Everyone loves free things, so you’ll be sure such resources will be really well-received.
15. Recommended Resources
Now, some of the best resources out there aren’t free – I get that. But with so many resources, your readers might want to know the best ones that they should put their money on.
That’s where you come in. If you’re a photographer and own a photography blog, use this opportunity to share with them some of the paid courses you’ve attended and which were worth your money.
Better yet if these courses come with affiliate programs, you can also get a small commission if someone buys a course you recommended, while they get a small discount!
16. Did You Know
If you come across an interesting fact in your niche, and you realize it’s not a commonly known fact, take this chance to pen it down.
You could definitely do a whole post around the topic. Remember AnswerthePublic? Look for other questions that people may have around this topic and weave that into your did you know-style article!
17. Dispelling Myths
This is almost like a “did you know” post. Except that this would dispel some common myths around the topic.
If you are looking for blog post ideas for beauty blogs, then dispelling myths would be a great topic to write on!
We may have received lots of tips and advice growing up from our moms, sisters, and friends around makeup, beauty, and skincare – but how many of them are really true?
18. Latest Happenings
You could take a look at the latest trends and comment on them. Or look at what’s happening in the news and give your own interpretation of it.
This could be for more serious topics around politics, health, and technology, but could also apply to the lifestyle, travel, and food niches. If you have an opinion on what’s happening, use this as a platform to comment on it.
19. Blast From The Past
Everyone loves a little nostalgia from time to time. And sometimes we forget that the Internet is actually a relatively recent invention! (1983 to be exact.)
If you’re a fashion blogger, you could do a little blast from the past type of post where you look at past fashion trends and how they’ve made a comeback.
Lifestyle bloggers could also feature retro and vintage home decor trends that were inspired from many years before.
20. Case Studies
If you’re a technology blogger or if you have products that you’re promoting or helping to review, case studies would be a great way to show your readers how the products are being used in real-life situations and to solve real issues.
21. Current Affairs
Similar to the latest happenings, except that this could take a deeper look at the latest issues and how these affect society as a whole.
If you’re a sustainability blogger and your country or region was coming up with some new green initiatives or sustainability laws, it would be a great opportunity for you to chime in on that.
22. Celebrity News
Don’t we all love a little celebrity news from time to time? You don’t have to be a celebrity blogger in order to comment or blog around celebrity news.
If you’re a lifestyle blogger and you notice that celebrities have been decorating their homes in a particular fashion, you could even talk about home decor trends favored by celebrities.
23. Seasonal Trends
Every season presents an opportunity to comment about fashion, style, and decor changes. You can write about new trends, looks, products, and even new recipes at the turn of the season. Pumpkin spice-anything in your recipes in fall, anyone?
Much like how-to posts, except that these go a bit more in-depth into the specific steps. These are great if you’re in the fashion and beauty niche and you want to teach your readers how to get that look.
If you have a presence on YouTube, your blog article could be a complement to your tutorial video.
25. Guest Posts
If you’re a beginner blogger and you want to build up credibility in your niche, then getting established bloggers to guest post in your blog is a good way to do so.
But make sure you write a well-researched pitch note explaining why they should spend the time contributing a guest post for your blog.
Alternatively, you could pitch for guest posts in their blog first and ask if they’d want to do so after you’ve succeeded in landing a guest post in their blog.
Sometimes you can also ask if experts, established bloggers or just people you know want to be interviewed for your blog.
We all have limits to what we know and it is always great to have another perspective on your blog – especially if you’re stuck on content!
As always, make sure your interview pitch is well-researched, and that you ask smart questions that are worth your interviewer’s time. Make sure you also ask them things you think your readers would most want to know.
27. A to Zs
Think of this as a glossary type of post where you list the As to Zs of a particular topic.
If you’re a fitness blogger, you could have a list of workout ideas from A to Z, starting from Air Squats and ending with Zig Zag Runs.
Think of it as official announcements to your readers about your personal life or any changes in your life and blog, whether it’s your content or type of posts.
If you’re a lifestyle blogger, it could be a wedding announcement, a pregnancy, or even a gender reveal announcement.
29. Top Lists
If you have read enough lifestyle blogs, you’ll know top 10 lists are all the rage. But why stop at the top 10. Go for 20 or 50 even, if you have enough ideas.
People are always searching for inspiration online and your list might help them make their decision or be the answer to their question. Just like this post here with the 110 ideas for first blog post for beginners!
30. Favourite Lists
Instead of just listing the top few based on certain criteria, let the criteria be your favorites! This is a great type of ideas for first blog post for beginners, as this list would be immensely personal and would be great if you’re seen as an expert or a credible source in your field.
So if you’re looking to share your travel thoughts, then a list of your 10 favorite locations over the past decade would be a good starter piece.
How Do I Start A Blog?
It starts with planning on the name of your blog and then looking for a hosting provider. I go with Bluehost but there are plenty of other web hosting services out there you can also choose from. (You get to start from as low as $3.95/month also get a free domain when you use my link to sign up with Bluehost.)
It should ideally come with a website builder like WordPress which would allow you to pick a theme.
You’ll then need to design a logo – but don’t get too caught up during this step. I just created a very simple one of my blog name. You can also use tools like Canva to do this.
Now when you start a blog, besides having the aim of sharing your amazing knowledge with the world, you may also want to monetize it and get paid. So start looking at different ways to get paid for blogging, like display advertising for starters.
Display advertising refers to digital advertisements that you place on your blog through ad networks like Google Display Network. You earn when people click on the ads and get directed to advertisers’ sites.
What Type Of First Blog Post Should I Write About?
You can write about all sorts of topics really. If the ideas above weren’t enough, some other sources you can get inspiration from including social media such as Facebook and Instagram where you get a sense of what’s trending and being talked about.
And if you want to know what’s being written by other writers, you can also look at Medium.
What Are The Most Popular Types Of Blogs?
According to Wix.com, the top five most popular blog types in 2021 are:
- Food blogs
- Travel blogs
- Health and fitness blogs

- Fashion and beauty blogs
And I’ve already given more than a few ideas above on what you can write about around these topics so, you’ve got what you need to get started!
How Do I Find Ideas For First Blog Post?
Generally, if you have a topic in mind, the sky’s pretty much the limit in terms of ideas!
Another great way is to reach out to your followers on social media, or if you don’t have followers yet, ask your friends – what’s one thing they want to know.
You’ll be surprised by the answers you get!
How Do Beginner Bloggers Make Money?
The short answer is – yes you can make money even as a beginner blogger and there are many ways you can do this!
The various ways you can make money as a beginner blogger are:
- Display advertising through ads on your blogs where you get paid when people click on them
- Blog sponsorships, getting sponsored to talk about products by brands that identify with your brand or blog
- Affiliate marketing, advertising the programmes and products of other companies, and getting a small commission off it
- Digital products such as e-books like my How To Become a Freelance Writer book
- Writing for people who need blog articles (I have a whole guide here!)
- Coaching other beginner writers like how I teach others on SEO blogging
Common Mistakes Beginner Bloggers Make
The most common mistake beginner bloggers make is just not starting.
I get it – it’s scary. You don’t know what to write or where to get started. But if something is worth doing, then it’s worth doing it ugly or imperfect.
So get started on writing that first entry with the ideas for first blog post for beginners that I shared above, and then work your way into your first five, then your first ten entries.
Guess what? If you think your entries could do with some polishing, there’s always the edit button there – it’s really not the end of the world!
Other common mistakes also include:
- Not having a plan
- Not defining your blog audience
- Not monetizing your blog properly
- Not optimising your posts for search engines – also known as not using SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Don’t know what it is? I talk about it in a three-hour course here.
- Spending way too much on expensive tools right at the start – try to find free tools as much as possible, such as Moz Free SEO Metrics
I know this because I’ve made some of these mistakes myself, and learned from them thankfully!
Ideas For First Blog Posts For Beginners FAQs
I hope that after reading all these ideas for first blog posts for beginners and seeing how I come up with topics, you’ll realize that blogging isn’t as hard as you think it is.
The key really is to get started with your very first piece.
Once you get that first piece done, then you can work your way to the fifth piece, then the tenth, and before you know it, you’ve got enough content to apply to advertising networks and start earning.
That’s when things will get really exciting because the more good content you have, the more people will want to come to visit your blog and you’ll also start to see your display advertising revenue go up!
It is a proven formula because I’ve done it myself and I know you can too!
